Roughing Pumps

A roughing pump is a mechanical vacuum pump that works in collaboration with a high-vacuum pump in the preliminary stage of the pumping process. It is the job of the roughing pump to drop the atmospheric pressure of a space to create a “rough” vacuum, at which point the high-vacuum pump takes over to complete the necessary application.

Usually, a roughing pump is connected to the main chamber of the high-vacuum pump through a separate pumping line and valve. The chamber is “pumped down” to a specific pressure, at which point the valve to the roughing pump is closed, completing that process. Then a second valve that connects the high-vacuum pump to the chamber is opened to finish the process.

Using a roughing pump is highly effective; however, it does require a complex set of lines and valves to the chamber. If problems occur, they can be difficult to fix.
