Through the use of high-speed jets of fluid that direct gas molecules out of a chamber, the diffusion pump is able to achieve a better vacuum than a standard mechanical pump. Unlike mechanical pumps, the diffusion pump does not have any moving parts to maintain or service, making it extremely durable and able to operate at pressures as low as 10 Pascals. Another important advantage to the diffusion pump is that is has an exceptionally long life.
